Remember when mobile phones were more like bricks?

Simon Mottram certainly does because he was among the first in the country to sell them to business people.

Now Simon has joined growing recruitment agency Supertemps as a consultant, but the 39-year-old from Menai Bridge started his career selling phones.

He was head-hunted by a large company to launch their corporate contract operations in the late 1990s after he first had the idea working for a High Street store.

“Back then mobiles were still pretty big and expensive but they were not wedded to work like they are today,” Simon said. “I was earning commission on one phone and thought, ‘If I could sell to a business, I could earn commission on 20 or 30 phones instead’.”

Simon’s entrepreneurial streak also extends to property development, which brought him to North Wales in the first place. He’s since fallen in love with the region and working for Supertemps in Colwyn Bay gives him another challenge to enjoy.

“I’ve worked in specialist recruitment before, but my role here is more general and fitting of the economy here, so it is a fresh challenge,” he said. “They’re a great bunch, it feels like an extended family already. I’m really looking forward to working here.”
