How to: Get the Best from a Recruitment Agency

Looking for a new job can be a daunting task. The market is highly competitive and there are so many things to consider as a jobseeker. In the first of our monthly how-to guides, we take a look at how you can get the best from a recruitment agency when you are looking for work.

  1. Find the right recruitment agency for you

There is a wide range of recruitment agencies in the marketplace, finding one that is the right fit for you is important. Carry out a little research before you spend time registering your details with any particular recruitment agency. Make a quick call to a few agencies to find out whether they recruit in your chosen industry sectors. Some agencies will specialise in certain sectors, so find one that is a good match to your skills, experience and career objectives.

  1. Build and maintain a good relationship with your consultant

Keep checking in with them throughout your job search and whilst on any temporary placements. Be completely honest with your consultant about what you want, how your placements are going as well as any jobs that you are applying for independently.

  1. Don’t underestimate the value of having a clean, clear and focused CV

Agencies initially filter candidates based on their CVs, so make sure your transferable skills and experience is clear and easy to understand. Evidence your skills with examples and performance statistics, rather than just throw in lots of keywords.  Always ensure that your profile on the agency’s database is up-to-date and accurate, otherwise you could miss out on opportunities that come up.

  1. Let your consultant help you prepare for an interview

Ask for advice on interview technique, what to wear and even what sort of interview questions to prepare for. Listen carefully to the way a consultant describes what an employer is seeking and think about possible examples you can refer to in your interview.

  1. Ask for feedback

Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from your consultant. This is something you will very rarely get applying for jobs online and can be really valuable in such a competitive job market. Recruitment consultants are highly tuned to the first impression you create as well as your interview behaviour. You’ll find it is much more than just CV advice that recruitment professionals can offer.

Working with a consultant gives you the chance to show off your enthusiasm and personality to someone who can vouch for you when they hear of upcoming opportunities. As well as this, a good recruitment agency will always be on hand to offer helpful advice and insight that can help you with your job search.
