5 great reasons to be a temporary worker

For the past 44 years Supertemps has supplied an army of temporary workers to organisations, large and small throughout North Wales.  The benefits of temping have improved immensely over this time period and Supertemps MD, Sarah Ellwood (a former temp herself) looks at some of the benefits of temping today and why it’s a great choice for so many workers.

1. Flexibility and Work-Life Balance

One of the most significant benefits of temporary work is the flexibility it provides.  “This is a big factor for many of our workers,” said Sarah.  “Temporary positions can be long term, short term, part-time, full-time and this allows workers to balance their professional and personal lives more effectively.”  “We have lots of workers who are only available for a limited time period – students during holidays, those who have another job lined up which hasn’t started yet, or maybe they are off travelling soon.  Temporary work to fill these gaps is great for the worker and the economy – it’s a win, win.”

“Then there’s the workers who choose part-time or school hours to fit in with family commitments – many are at home with the children during holidays and choose to work school friendly hours the rest of the year. This flexibility is a real plus for them,” she added.

2. Building Skills and Experience

“We always encourage job seekers to be as flexible as possible when considering opportunities,” said Sarah.  “Temp work offers great opportunity to broaden your experience  and develop new skills”. “By working in different industries and environments, workers can broaden their expertise whilst building their CV. Eyes are often opened to opportunities they didn’t know existed, or industries they were unfamiliar with.  We have so many workers who thought they wanted to head out in one direction but, as a result of a temporary assignment, ended up doing something completely different and loving it!”  she added.

3. Networking Opportunities

Working in varied temporary positions allows you to expand your professional network. Each new role introduces you to a different team, manager, or maybe even a different industry and the contacts that go with it.  For many, this can lead to future job opportunities and valuable long-term, professional relationships. “It’s also a good insight into the type and size of organisation you would like to work for, as well as those you wouldn’t!  said Sarah.

4. Financial Benefits

As well as competitive hourly pay rates, agency workers are entitled to additional paid holiday, pension contributions, pay parity with their permanent equivalents after a qualifying period, as well as sick, maternity and paternity leave.

“Some temporary positions also offer bonuses and/or overtime,” said Sarah.  “temporary work can provide a steady income without long-term commitment but with more of the benefits that permanent employees enjoy” she added.

5. Pathway to Permanent Employment

For many, temporary work serves as a stepping stone to permanent work. It can be a great way for employers and workers to “test the water” before making that permanent commitment.  “It may not even be the original role you end up working in,” said Sarah.  “It is often our experience that a worker enters an organisation for one vacancy and then demonstrates skills or capabilities in other areas – leading to successful job offers in a different department or discipline.  Again, it’s a win, win for employer and worker.
