How to prepare for your IT job interview

You’ve perfected your CV, nailed the job application, and have been invited for the all-important interview.

After a burst of excitement at the prospect of landing your dream IT job, you might find that panic sets in as your interview looms closer and closer. But if you’re feeling nervous, being thoroughly prepared for the big day is key to settling those nerves and giving you the best chance of getting the job.

Here are some pointers on how to prepare to make the best impression possible at your IT job interview:

Do your research

If you turn up to an interview knowing nothing about the company, you’re quite simply doomed. Spend some time researching the company you’re interviewing for. Make sure you know their story, their values, their history and their team as well as you can.

You’ll likely be asked questions about what you know about the company and why you’re a good fit for them, so prepare an outline answer for this. There’s nothing worse than a lack of knowledge about a company. If you want to prove your commitment to the role the moment you step into your interview, do your homework!

Review your experience and CV

What technical skills have you listed on your CV? Be prepared to discuss these at length. After all, those skills are part of the reason you’ve been invited for an interview. Sit with your CV prior to your interview and take a look through it. Is there anything you’re a little rusty on? Are there new developments or updates which you need to catch up on? If so, get studying.

Learn about the role

Employers list the exact skills, knowledge and qualifications they’d like their ideal candidate to have, so it’s a sure-fire way to make sure you meet their requirements. Consider what the position involves and what matches your current experience, where you may be able to bring expertise above other candidates, and traits or skills which make you particularly suited to the role.

It’s always best to be honest. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge gaps in your skill set or experience. Instead, show that you’re proactive by doing your research and explaining how you could learn these skills on the job.

Run through questions and practice your answers

Before your interview, run through as many possible interview questions and answers as you can. While you don’t need to memorise your answers (and it’s probably not a good idea to try), it’s a good idea to jot down some notes and get to grips with your responses. Ask questions

Asking questions is one of the most important aspects of an interview. It’s your best chance of showing that you’re genuinely interested in learning more about the role and the company itself.
